¡@¡@“For me, creating is a kind of yeast and lubricant of life.” Liao Yu-An, born in the 70s, is talented in transforming into twisted-animal-images to symbolize himself and his state of mind; these are his materials for creation. With self-uglification and self-mockery, he can express all kinds of boredoms and contradictive emotions. In 2003, he won first place of Taipei Art Award for his “Birdman – a Self Portrait”. Afterwards he has developed many kinds of roles with animal face or figure, coated them with candy sweet intense colors and patterns so that he can cover his intimate and embarrassed emotions. He tries to create an ego in the imaginary world so that he can mock himself and escape from the world in a humble way but with power. Through painting, Liao Yu-An constantly recasts and digests the fragment of life, using all kind of emotional malfunction, reforming and transforming them into spiritual comfort and cure. |

¡@¡@Liao has been to many national and international large-scale exhibitions, from associated to solo. His style, from cute animal images to twisted, mysterious, and transformed combination of human and animal. In recent years he even unlocked the animal mask and presented the distorted psyche and physical status with human figure to deduct the depending relationship between human body and animal image, which is unsuitable yet undetachable. Growing up in the jungle of city, Liao was surrounded by all kind of noises and chaos and complexities, and for this his works are full of urban sceneries and complexes. All the comportments and behaviors are the projections of urban dwellers, with twisted expressions and exhausted movements. He has brought us to a state of speechless and embarrassment. Thus in a certain moment, all the disorders and disputes consolidate into an eternal now of glamour and vivid imageries.
¡@¡@Using colors to conduct visions and nourish scenes, Liao Yu-An tries to peek and stimulate intimate emotions such as boredom and anxiety. He uses dazzling candy coat to cover the real dark psyche, with black-eyed ghostly monster or cactus-like human figure, or even human who depends on animal for a spiritual pursue. His works are another dimension of Ukiyo-e.
¡@¡@Within everyone’s heart core there will be a dark and intimate part that rules, in this part we can be clumsy and lame. With distortions, complexes, symbols, and silent breathes, Liao Yu-An paces slowly but firmly, mildly covered his ego and obtaining a mild expectation, searching for the coming surprises. |
